Choosing the right inverter

An inverter is an electrical device that converts direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC); the converted AC can be at any required voltage and frequency with the use of appropriate transformers, switching, and control circuits. Power cuts have become a regular phenomenon and recurring cost of the generators proves to be a big hole in the pocket. As a result invertors of late have assumed immense important to tide over the powerless nights. However, there are few points one needs to consider before picking up an inverter.

The first item to consider while buying your inverter is to calculate the total amount of wattage needed to run your gadgets. For this you need to find out the exact cumulative power required by your gadgets. After deriving at the figure, find an inverter which will provide about 50% more than you require.

Next thing is the battery, if the inverter must produce 500 watts all the time then battery must also provide 500 plus the wattage lost from the inverter conversion function. Technically speaking, inverter comes in two varieties: Modified sine wave, and Pure sine wave. The difference here is in the quality of power supply. Modified sine wave inverters are fine for most applications- particularly where the appliance has its own power adaptor, such as with charges and laptop computers.

A pure sine wave inverter is a good choice when the equipment being used is sensitive, such as with research or medical equipment.
